More Steam users are already using Windows 10 than Windows 8

October’s Steam Hardware Survey results have gone live, and rather than navigating directly to GPU and CPU popularity as we usually do, we paid attention to operating system (OS) popularity instead.

After Microsoft announced that more than 110 million devices were running Windows 10 in October, we’ve had little cause to doubt just how pervasive Windows 10 is becoming.

Even the promise of advertising localised to your Start Menu and app store hasn’t stifled its growth, and Steam’s latest survey results show that gamers are as much a part of that growth as anyone else.

According to Steam’s survey, Windows 10 64-bit is already the second most popular OS for users the digital distribution platform. In fact, it’s grown by as much as 2.43% in a single month, a comparatively massive swing when compared to the change registered for not only OS’ but very nearly everything measured by Steam.

Most changes are sub 0.09%, so you know Windows 10 is making waves. It’s actually just under 9% ahead of Windows 8 64-bit, an operating system that’s been in use for 3 years now.

It’s no surprise that so many have migrated to Windows 10, particularly if you were on Windows 8. For all intents and purposes, Windows 10 is just a superior, more polished and better thought out Windows 8, so it makes a lot of sense to move.

It’ll be harder to convince gamers to leave Windows 7, but DirectX 12’s reliance on Windows 10, as well as the advantages it grants to Xbox One owners are all legitimate reasons to eventually move.

Heck, you can’t even use an Xbox One wireless controller on your PC unless you have Windows 10 installed.

And, of course, Microsoft will soon be downloading their latest OS to your PC whether you like it or not.
