StarCraft II breaks torrent download record

16 November 2010

Apparently not even a 93 Metacritic average and pretty much universal critics’ acclaim can persuade some people to part with their cash – in the three months since launch, StarCraft II has been downloaded 2.3 million times over torrent networks, according to Torrent Freak. Coming in at a chunky 7.19 GB download, this accounts for a gargantuan 15.77 petabytes – or almost 16 quadrillion bytes – of total data transfer, making it the somewhat egregious #1 title holder in this category. It’s almost impressive, except it’s just a dismal indictment of humanity.

To put it into some comparative perspective, the Large Hadron Collider – you know, the world’s largest particle accelerator, currently tasked with solving some of the most fundamental physics problems of the universe – produces approximately 15 petabytes of data in an entire year. StarCraft II is approximately four times more popular than dark matter.

And that doesn’t even include copies acquired over LAN or other networks. What’s more, because Blizzard also uses its own legitimate BitTorrent downloader to distribute the game digitally, the real total must surely be significantly larger.
