iGame's Heroes of Newerth servers shut down

2 December 2010

Last night MyGaming received word from local gaming service provider iGame that their local Heroes of Neworth (HoN) servers were being shut down. iGame prepared an official statement, which has been pending approval by their legal department until now.

In the meantime, HoN developer S2 Games posted a curt announcement on their forums that there would no longer be any servers operating in SA, and placing the blame squarely at iGame’s feet. The announcement is published below:

We have had a severe security issue with the provider and are currently taking proper legal action and there is nothing we can do about this issue at this time. We are sorry for the inconvenience and iGame is soley to blame here.

iGame has now released their official rexplanation of the situation:

The iGame HoN servers have been shut down due to the breakdown of recent talks between iGame and S2 Games.

S2 had raised concerns about not being granted access to the South African Boxes hosted by iGame, which form part of normal network security procedure internally and was the basis of the original agreement between S2 games and iGame. Although iGame had responded to an earlier request from S2 Games to attempt to resolve this issue by stating that the situation would be considered and evaluated on merit of the request, S2 has chosen not to proceed with these talks and has forced a server shutdown.

This situation was intensified by the recent ISP landscape changes locally, peering links and routing being affected caused users to time out and experience increased latency during peak times.

These issues were raised by gamers directly to S2 Games and although iGame did respond by attempting to relieve the situation during peak times the situation is largely out of iGame’s control due to ISP’s actively not peering with certain other ISP’s, S2 however has to date not responded to the issue of the VoIP on one instance of the S2 Server Manager not working, despite numerous attempts to contact S2 Technical Staff.

During this period of troubleshooting , S2 games had found an error in the configs that they had issued to iGame for the other two servers, which made a difference in Upload and logging speeds.

S2 Recently shut down the IS and DoGaming servers and awarded iGame the exclusive rights to host the title in the South African Territory while the exact same access criteria was in place now being cited as a security risk by S2 Games. This access criteria has been part of the normal operations procedure for HoN since the Beta Phase.

iGame has provided the service as a free one to S2 Games, providing Networking, Hardware, Bandwidth and full support and has had the same policy since the Beta, not allowing Outside RDP access onto hardware due to the security threat it poses to the entire network connected to the S2 Hosting Boxes.

We are disappointed in the way in which S2 Games have handled the situation, choosing not to help solve problems and instead shifting the blame to iGame for something that both parties had agreed to when initiating the first Beta servers in SA.

We are saddened by the fact that the issue escalated to this point, we have tried to speak to S2 games but they have been non receptive to our requests for support in the issues that have been reported to us by the community.

We unfortunately cannot resolve issues with software that is not our own without the help of the developers themselves. We have supported the local community to the best of our ability since hosting the Beta, we therefore apologize for this breakdown in service, as although the way in which it was handled by S2 games leaves much to be desired and could have been resolved had discussions not broken down, iGame has always supported the local community and will continue to do so, albeit with titles other than HoN”

iGame wishes the HoN community the best and trust that S2 Games will address the lack of servers with expedience.

This essentially marks the end of locally hosted Heroes of Newerth in SA, as no other local service providers currently operate any servers.
