Physics-bases puzzler and indie gaming hit World of Goo has made its debut on the Ubuntu Software Centre. The Ubuntu Software Centre is an application portal exclusive to the Ubuntu Linux operating system. In addition to providing access to purchasable applications, it also gives access to all the free applications available in the Ubuntu package repository.
Purchases made through the Ubuntu Software Centre are linked to an UbuntoOne Single Sign-On account, which means that users will be able to re-download their game after an Ubuntu re-installation.
World of Goo is priced at US$19.99 (±R138) via the Ubuntu Software Centre, the same price as the title is sold for through developer 2D Boy’s website. Unfortunately this doesn’t compete with the Steam offering of US$9.99 (±R69) but then again, Steam doesn’t work on Ubuntu.
It is unclear whether purchasing World of Goo via the Ubuntu Software Centre gives access to the game on other platforms, as is the case if it is purchased through 2D Boy directly, which provides buyers with an option to download Windows, Mac, and Linux versions at their convenience.
Still, this is an interesting move on the part of Canonical and 2D Boy, which will hopefully open up more gaming doors for those gamers who prefer to operate on Linux.
