World of Warcraft: Cataclysm out today – prices compared

7 December 2010

Today sees the last of 2010’s mammoth game releases hit store shelves. World of Warcraft is the undisputed king of the MMO hill, and is quite possibly the most profitable video game franchise of all time, given that over 12 million people pay in the region of R120 per month to play it. Then of course there are the expansion packs which are released every few years, the last of which was Wrath of the Lich King, which introduced a substantial amount of content to the game, including a new continent; Northrend – the home of the Lich King.

Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copes within 24 hours of going on sale, making it the best selling PC game of all time. This record will almost definitely have been broken this time tomorrow, given that WoW is going stronger than ever right now – an incredible feat considering its pushing into its seventh year on the market.

Wrath of the Lich king sees the return of a terrifying dragon not seen since the WarCraft II days, Deathwing the Destroyer. Deathwing makes his return by tearing through a dimensional barrier, which in turn causes a massive cataclysm which reshapes Azeroth.

Cataclysm promises for the first time to implement a redesign of the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. Original World of Warcraft areas will be overhauled; it will finally be possible to use flying mounts in these areas.

What to expect

– The level cap will be increased from 80 to 85.

– Flying mounts in old Azeroth.

– New towns and roughly 3500 new quests.

– Seven new dungeons.

– Three new raids.

– New battlegrounds

– The introduction of Archaeology as secondary skill.

– Two new races; Goblins and Worgen.

– Various class changes.

– Revamped stat system.
