In its first 24 hours of launch, World of WarCraft’s third expansion managed to push 3.3 million units, securing it the #1 position on the “Fastest-Selling PC Games Ever” list and presumably a fairly highly charted place on the “Reasons for Calling in Sick Last Wednesday” list. The previous record holder was – surprise! – the game’s second expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, which sold 2.8 million copies in its first day. Apparently World of WarCraft gamers are multiplying.
Of course, a massive worldwide release that saw the game hitting shelves on the same day in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa probably kinda helped.
“We had to bring Azeroth to the brink of destruction in Cataclysm, but the result was our best expansion yet,” said Mike Morhaime, the king of Blizzard.”We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content.”
