A lot of popular modern games have adopted Free-to-Play or cosmetic-based payment models, which rely on the purchase of in-game items as a main source of income.
Valve’s competitive games – namely Dota 2 and Counter-Strike – have seen massive amounts of success using this financial model, as the games are more accessible and populated and some of the cosmetic items have gained significant value.
These cosmetic items (or ‘skins’) can be sold to other players for Steam Wallet funds. Although these items are purely cosmetic and do not change gameplay mechanics whatsoever, many players will apparently pay ridiculously large sums of money for a rare item.
