Whether you’re playing on console or PC, chances are you’ve come across the first-person shooter genre.
The FPS genre is fiercely competitive and lends itself well to online or local multiplayer, as the gameplay is simple but addictive. We’ve compiled a list of the ten best first-person shooters ever made.
These titles are sorted by the GameRankings rating, although they do also include Metacritic ratings. This is because GameRankings provides an accurate measurement of games developed before the year 2000, while Metacritic becomes unreliable when rating older games.
Only titles that focus on core shooter gameplay were included – for example, Bioshock would not qualify for the list, but Counter-Strike: Global Offensive would.
