Games you still can’t buy online in South Africa and how to get around the restrictions

The Steam summer sale is right around the corner, and PC gamers everywhere are already salivating at the thought of incredible deals.

South African gamers are even more fortunate, as since Steam converted prices into the Rand, we tend to play a lot less than the USD price.

The one downside of the conversion process is that some games can not be purchased from the store, and some games that were previously available can no longer be purchased.

The Xbox and PlayStation South African stores are also woeful compared to their international peers, with dozens of games arriving weeks later or not at all.

We compiled a list of ways to get around these restrictions and purchase your favourite games:

How to get around the restrictions (Steam)

Buy physical:

Many triple-A games (like Rainbow Six: Siege) can be purchased from a traditional brick and mortar store (ironically the copy will still register on Steam).

For smaller titles, indie releases, and early-access games, you will unfortunately have to look elsewhere.

Other sites:

Sites like GOG and HumbleBundle offer a clear alternative to Steam without many of its restrictions (including DRM).

Otherwise you could turn to less reputable key-selling sites, although we caution as to their reliability.

Through your browser:

Reddit user ChaosCore seems to have found an easy fix to the problem by using some browser trickery:

Go to the page with this error and open your browser’s JavaScript Console (right click -> inspect -> console in Chrome).

Enter the following:

$J.post(“/app/7”, { sessionid: g_sessionID, appid_to_clear_from_queue: ****** });

Where “******” is the ID of an app which is unavailable in your region (copy or retype it from address bar).

Press Enter.

Note that you’ll have to do this again for any other unavailable applications in your region.

How to get around the restrictions (Console)

Buy physical:

Several games (specifically multi-disc Xbox 360 games) can only be purchased as a physical copy.

For smaller titles, indie releases, and early-access games, you will unfortunately have to look elsewhere.

Change your region:

The best way to get access to the title only available on international stores is to change your region setting.

This may hamstring you in other ways, and you will have to create an entirely new account.
