Back in September 2010, Capcom’s Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition producer Yosihnori Ono confirmed that there were no plans to release a PC version of the game, and piracy was to blame.
Ono claimed that the PC version of Street Fighter IV was the most highly pirated of all the various platform releases. Capcom decided that the Street Fighter property must be protected, and cannot become regarded as ‘free’ for certain platforms. Ono did add that if Capcom found a powerful enough copy protection system, they may eventually consider a PC release.
News of such a copy protection system has yet to emerge, but Capcom’s Christian Svensson, vice president of strategic planning and business development at Capcom US, isn’t ready to give up on the idea.
Speaking during a Capcom video Q&A Svensson said: “I am a die-hard, die-hard PC gamer and I’ve continued to push for the existence of a Street Fighter IV PC. I’ve always said the answer is ‘no’ until it becomes ‘yes,’ and let’s just say I’ve not given up pushing, and maybe at some point in the future we could change that question to, ‘Why did it take so long?’ instead of ‘Why is there no [PC version]?’ Unfortunately, we can’t do that yet, but I’m still cautiously optimistic,” he concludes.
