Sony’s Andrew House believes that the company has the capacity to ship more than five million consoles to Playstation fans before the end of the company’s fiscal year, which ends in March 2014.
House was speaking at the Tokyo Games Show where Sony was demonstrating the Playstation 4’s capabilities along with the new Dualshock 4 controller, the Playstation Vita TV, and the new PS Vita-2000.
House said that the company is well on its way to shipping over a million consoles for pre-orders and even more for retail stock. House says that this amounts to a million consoles per month and believes that their manufacturing capabilities are up to the task.
Sony Computer Entertainment America boss Jack Tretton has previously said that PS4 will be the company’s biggest launch in its history.
Sony’s Playstation 4 will be delayed in Japan to a February 2014 release, but will have the PS Vita TV available before launch as the system’s companion. Sony expects to earn more revenue through increased subscriptions to their PS Plus service, which is now the only way for PS4 gamers to use online multiplayer services.
Microsoft has offered no predictions for sales of the Xbox One as yet. To date, Sony has shipped more than 78 million Playstation 3 consoles over its seven-year lifespan, while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has also amassed sales of more than 78 million in the last eight years.
