The Anonymous hackers versus Sony debacle continues. In an extensive interview with PlayStation Lifestyle an outspoken member, presumably part of the inner-circle of this particular branch of Anonymous hacking operations, has discussed the groups motivations and intent.
Anonymous hacker going by the handle of ‘Takai’ made a number of bold statements about the Anonymous intent. Discussing the introduction of anti-DDoS specialists Prolexic into the equation, Takai said: “It was expected. We knew sooner or later Sony would enlist outside help. I’d say, Prolexic is going down like a two dollar wh*** in a Nevada chicken ranch.”
These threats probably should not be taken lightly, as Anonymous has previously proven to be quite a formidable opponent when they are focussed. Security firm HBGary, which sells products to the US Federal Government, fell victim to Anonymous wrath, having multiple layers of their own security infrastructure compromised and a huge swathe of damning e-mails released. To be fair, HBGary started it.
“The last thing we want is Sony thinking we were are in any way discouraged,” said Takai. “So far, all Sony has seen from us is poking and prodding. A simple salute to let them know, we’re coming.”
With the anti-DDoS measures in place, speculation arose suggesting that Anonymous would lose motivation, backed up with analysis of some rather frenzied discussion in the their IRC OpSony attack coordination channel. “Make no mistake, what you saw…and thought to be frustration is merely preparation for what’s to come. We said, expect us. Counting us out, would be a mistake,” assured Takai.
Sony is in for one hell of a wake-up call
Takai continued by stating that there are plans in motion for a wide range of offensives against Sony. “For the sake of not shooting ourselves in the foot, I won’t comment on specific operational tactics we may or may not employ here. I will however say, that if Sony thinks LOIC [(DDoS attacks0] is the only trick in our hat…they’re in for a hell of a wake-up call. We’re really going all out for this one.”
“There are many different faces to the operation. Something we encourage is creative thinking,” said Takai. This likely speaks of the SonyRecon offshoot of the attack operation – a group of Anonymous dedicated to uncovering as much personal information as possible about top-level Sony personnel and affiliates.
“As employees of Sony, they are considered legitimate targets of the operation,” stated Takai. He went on the make it clear that Anonymous would not go so far as to endanger safety and lives: “We’ve already made it clear in SonyRecon that pranks like bomb threats, or false fire alarms are considered out of bounds. That would impede emergency responders from dealing with actual emergencies and thus endanger people. We’re being more calculated than that.”
“My belief…is that Anonymous is not done with Sony. We’ve known all along this war would not be won in a day. We’re here for the long haul though,” states Takai.
“Sony needs to learn a lesson about life. You can push people only so far, eventually someone’s going to push back. Sony picks fights with kids whom they know to be incapable of defending themselves. We’re here to say, the defenceless aren’t alone. Sony will not go [trotting] through the internet unchecked or unchallenged,” Takai concluded.
