About the only thing Sony’s PS Vita and Nintendo’s WiiU console have in common is that they both have dodgy names. Hey Sony, what’s wrong with PSP2? Or Wii2 for that matter, Nintendo?
But I digress. One of the coolest features on offer with Nintendo’s WiiU is the controller’s 6.2-inch touch screen, which will double as a primary gaming display if you don’t have access to a television. Nintendo plans to use the secondary screen in various innovative ways, adding new dynamics to gameplay.
Many have wondered if Sony could pair the PS Vita up with the PS3 in a similar manner, and when asked, SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida was surprisingly open to the idea, telling Develop that “It is very interesting the ways that Nintendo went with Wii U, and I was surprised it wasn’t exactly as it had been rumoured.”
“Already people are starting to ask about linking Vita and PS3 to do something similar, in terms of using two screens, and having controls on the screen. That’s very interesting, and we will have to experiment,” said Yoshida.
Here’s the kicker:
“Lots of the things that developers of Vita games are doing, as you may have seen, is experimenting with connectivities between Vita and PS3,” elaborating: “The Wipeout [2048] team came up with their cross play ideas, and the other Vita teams have come up with ways of playing with two systems. It’s just a matter of time, as we provide the SDKs to developers so they can make use of both PS3 and Vita, and they might come up with something interesting.”
