PS5 gets Variable Refresh Rate support this week

26 April 2022

Sony has announced that variable refresh rate (VRR) will start rolling out to PS5 systems globally from this week onwards.

VRR dynamically syncs a display’s refresh rate to the PS5’s graphical output, resulting in a smoother visual experience while eliminating screen tearing and stuttering.

However, players will need an HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TV or PC monitor to enable the feature.

Once users have installed the necessary system update, VRR support will automatically be enabled in the following supported titles:

  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
  • Deathloop
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • DIRT 5
  • Godfall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard

The games listed aren’t the only titles that will receive VRR support, though, as Sony expects more existing and upcoming games to add support for the technology in the future.

Sony added that VRR can be applied to games that do not support it, which might improve the title’s video quality.

However, if enabling VRR in unsupported games leads to visual artefacts or unexpected visual anomalies, it should be turned off.

For help troubleshooting any issues, Sony has recommended visiting its PS5 support page.

To change your PS5’s VRR settings, you will have to navigate to Screen and Video in the Settings menu after installing the necessary update.
