PlayStation announces new loyalty programme for gamers

15 July 2022

Sony has announced that it will be launching PlayStation Stars later this year — a new loyalty programme that will offer gamers points and rewards.

PlayStation Stars will be free to join and members will earn rewards by completing a variety of campaigns and activities.

Some of these campaigns will require you to play any game to receive a reward, while others require you to win tournaments, earn specific trophies, or even be the first player to platinum a blockbuster title in your local time zone.

These points can then be redeemed in a catalogue that may include PSN wallet funds or select PlayStation Store products.

Additionally, PlayStation Plus members enrolled in PlayStation Stars automatically earn points for purchases on the PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Stars members can also earn digital collectables — including figurines of iconic characters from games and other forms of entertainment.

These digital collectables will vary in rarity and be available to collect at all times.

For those of you that might be concerned that this sounds like an NFT scheme, Sony’s vice president of licensed merchandise Grace Chen has made it clear that this is not the case.

“You can’t trade them or sell them. It is not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs,” said Chen to The Washington Post.

Sony said it is currently performing early tests on the programme before launching it later this year in phased regional rollouts.
