At this point there are only rumours to go by, but if there is any truth in them then June will see the 80GB PS3 getting $100 (R1 000) hacked off its retail price.
The rumors can be traced back to Wedbush Morgan – a financial services and investment firm – which also predicted that Microsoft would chop $50 off the Xbox 360 Pro, taking it down to the $250 mark.
The news follows a report that Sony had recently managed to get its PS3 manufacturing cost down from $690 to $450, just $50 more than its current US retail price.
If the PS3 does come down to $300, then 2009 may very well be “the year of the PS3”, a title that was expected in 2008 but never really materialised.
Along with some big PS3-exclusive titles scheduled such as Killzone 2, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2, at $300 the PS3’s value proposition for 2009 will dramatically increase. And it had better, if Sony is looking to recoup the $2.5billion the console has cost the company to date.
