Analysts have been predicting a PS3 price cut of $100 for some time now. After all, Sony has managed to get the manufacturing costs down, and many believe that if the PS3 was to come down to the $300 mark it would sell like hot cakes.
Sony has maintained that they are focusing on profitability, and although they could dramatically increase their installed user base by cutting the retail price, they are more concerned with making some money back on the console. However, a larger install base means more games sold, which in turn means more profit for Sony. The company has however remained adamant that they are happy with the console’s sales to date.
It makes sense that Sony will be quick to deny any looming price cuts. After all, if word gets out that the PS3 is due for a price reduction, consumers will immediately stop buying the consol until it happens.
A monster rumor has surfaced, just a few days after reports came in about some of Sony’s biggest development partners announcing their view that the PS3 needs to come down in price so that its installed user base can grow and they can sell more games. There have even been thinly veiled threats from developers to start focusing more time on Nintendo’s Wii unless Sony does something drastic.
According to 2old2play.com, USA based games store EB Games, has mentioned that they are preparing for a PS3 price set to take effect this coming Sunday March 22. According to the source, the PS3 80GB will come down from $400 to $300. At this price point, the Xbox 360 60GB Pro will lose its pricing advantage, unless Microsoft reduces its retail price, which we are sure it will.
Considering that the PS3 comes with a Blu-Ray player, built in Wireless and arguably more untapped potential in terms of processing power than the Xbox 360, at the same price point the console should be able to make significant headway in terms of closing the 9million console gap that the Xbox 360 is leading.
We are highly skeptical of this rumor; however at least we won’t have to wait long before we know if it bears any truth.
