Last week we looked at some of the rumors surrounding the possibility of a Slim version of Sony’s PS3 console.
With a number of photographs emerging from a Chinese manufacturing plant depicting the trimmed down version of the PS3, speculation was rife with a firm divide between those who believed that Sony was in fact planning to announce the new console at E3, and those who believed the entire thing to be a hoax.
We were of the opinion that the images are legit, and that Sony is in fact planning on launching a Slim PS3, and according to Fudzilla the rumors are true.
Apparently, sources at Sony today told Fudzilla that the PS3 Slim is real and will be released later this year. While Sony has not confirmed it publically, Fudzilla’s inside information has yet to be incorrect, making this the closest thing to official confirmation that we are likely to hear for the next few months.
Fudzilla went on to say that Sony would not announce the Slim at E3, and is instead waiting until the Tokyo Game Show to make the announcement. Apparently, Sony is delaying the announcement because of a high quantity of PS3’s that are currently sitting in distribution channels. Announcing the PS3 Slim now would make it difficult to move existing stock.
Many analysts are predicting that the announcement of the PS3 Slim will be followed by a price cut to the original PS3 console, however, Fudzilla reports that the price cut will most probably be temporary, and will serveto clear out old PS3 stock.
