PSN update 2.80 now compulsory

21 July 2009

Sony’s most recent PSN update was originally released in June.

Many PS3 owners put off downloading updates for a variety of reasons. When a gamer turns on their console, they want to play, and often being greeted by an update notification after a long day at work is the last thing a gamer wants. So updates are put off and forgotten about.

There is also the fear of damage to the console which updates have reportedly caused in the past.

However, Sony has put its foot down and made the latest update, update 2.80, now compulsory. Any connected PS3 will now provide the download prompt and will not allow PS3 owners to go onto PSN without downloading the new firmware.

The update brings with it no noticeable changes.

According to PSN Director Eric Lempel “The playback quality of some PlayStation 3 format software has been improved,”

The download require 142MB of bandwidth.

Update

While early reports indicated that the update was compulsory in order to log into PSN, reports have been coming in stating that the update is only required for certain games when playing over PSN.
