PS3 80GB available for R3569 through Kalahari.net

26 August 2009

Early this week Sony announced a $100 price cut on both its 160GB and 80GB PS3 along with a new slimmed down 120GB PS3 dubbed the PS3 Slim.

The new $300 price tag on the 80GB PS3 and PS3 Slim has many local gamers wondering how much the console will retail for in SA.

While local distributer SterKinekor told MyGaming that the new console and pricing structure would most probably arrive in October, it would seem that gamers will not have to wait that long to get their hands on a cheap PS3.

Kalahari.net is currently selling what may well be the cheapest brand new retail PS3 that South Africa has yet seen at R3569. To sweeten the deal further, the package includes the recently released and critically acclaimed PS3 exclusive inFamous.

The post on Kalahari.net does not indicate that the offer is a special or a clearance sale, however, it does indicate that the regular price is R4199.95. It is likely that the price-cut has been implemented in order to clear out old PS3 stock before the new stock arrives in the next month.

The special price marks around R1400 off what customers would have payed for the console just six weeks ago, an impressive reduction especially considering that the package includes a game which retails for around R700.

Yesterday rumors surfaced that new official PS3 pricing had been announced and that the console would sell for R3800. Sterkinekor told MyGaming that the reports were not true, and that they themselves did not know what the new retail price on the console would be. Take-down notices were apparently issued to publications which had carried the story.

It still remains to be seen at what price the PS3 Slim will retail for in SA, but the safe bets are in the region of R3800-R4200. This makes Kalahari.net’s current pricing an offer that is unlikely to be beaten for the foreseeable future.’
