According to developer Naughty Dog, the soon to be released Uncharted 2: Among Thieves has effectively ‘maxed out’ the visual rendering capabilities of the PS3.
According to PS3center.net, Naughty Dog made the statement at a recent preview of the game. Naughty Dog representative Amy Henning commented that the first Uncharted used only one third of the PS3’s power. This means that the sequel is more than three times as demanding as its prequel.
Apparently a number of the internal rendering processes were taken away from the main processor and are being taken care of by the SPUs. If this is true then it means that it would be impossible to develop the game in its current state for the Xbox 360. This method has apparently allowed the developer to increase the quality of the animations and visuals, leaving the main processor to “focus on getting all of that richness in the backgrounds.”
The game has gone gold and is set for launch later this month. The first review of the game has already surfaced, awarding it 21/20.
