Nothing wrong with new firmware says Sony

1 October 2009

Sony has responded to public allegations that its most recent Playstation 3 firmware update – 3.01, is causing some console Blu Ray drives to become faulty.

The manufacturer has told Eurogamer that the problems that users are reporting “is not an issue with the firmware” and is instead related to the consoles. Sony has requested that any users who experience problems send their machines in for repair.

This comes in response to a number of complaints online that once the firmware was updated owners found that Blu Ray movies and games would not boot, despite functioning correctly beforehand.

Originally the 3.01 firmware update was implemented to solve several bugs in the most recent 3.0 version, which introduced problems with some controllers and bugs in games such as Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Wipeout HD.

Although Sony will not admit to it, if firmware version 3.01 has indeed had some negative effect on selected Blu Ray consoles the company may need to reassess their update strategy.
