Mass Effect 2 to be released on PS3?

12 October 2009

Rumours have surfaced recently surrounding a possible release of Bioware’s upcoming RPG, Mass Effect 2, to the Playstation 3.

Mass Effect, upon its release in 2008, was only available on PC and Xbox 360. The game received positive reviews and yielded strong sales figures. Despite this, no plans for a PS3 version of the title were ever announced.

Yesterday IGN uncovered that both a Russian Electronic Arts website and Australian retailer GAME have listings for a PS3 version of Mass Effect 2. While this is likely the result of administrative errors on the part of the retailers concerned, the incident has lead to widespread speculation and rumors that a PS3 version of the game is in production.

A PS3 version of the game would be a smart move from EA.  In recent weeks sales of the Sony manufactured console have increased significantly on the back of the PS3 Slim release and price cut in early September. With PS3 sales expected to continue to grow going into the Christmas period, EA would have a significant PS3 audience come release time next year.

So far the game has been confirmed for PC and Xbox 360, although Matt Atwood, Bioware’s PR representative, mentioned in the past that he believes that the game will be “an Xbox 360 exclusive for at least a short period of time”

Bioware has refused to confirm the possibility of a PS3 release, commenting through the Mass Effect community forums that “we don’t comment on rumours”.

This open ended response might suggest that Bioware is indeed planning a PS3 release for Mass Effect 2.
