Originally announced around the same time as the PS3’s introduction, Heavy Rain made a massive splash before virtually disappearing.
The game has generated tremendous hype due to its impressive visuals and unique take on human interaction. Developed by Quantic dream, the same studio behind one of our firm favorites from the 90s; Omikron: The Nomad Soul, Heavy Rain is being billed as “a dark film noir thriller with mature themes”.
There will be no super natural elements in the game, and its would seem that the developer is adopting a take similar to contemporary psychological thriller films, asking the ultimate question: How far are you willing to go to save someone you love?
“Heavy Rain is about normal people who have landed in extraordinary situations. I wanted a much more personal story. The first thing that came to my mind, as a father of two little boys, was that the main theme should simply be a father’s love for his son. This is not a game about saving the princess or the world. Its purely about a father’s love. The main story will revolve around four different characters, and we’re putting the spotlight on their perceptions. The question ‘what is good and what is evil’ is the key here, that will be just a matter of viewpoint…I believe heavily in moral choices, I’m going to use them A LOT. They’re not about being good or bad, but about finding the right balance” said the games’s director David Cage in an interview with Chief Magazine in 2008.
According to Japanese magazine Famitsu, the game will be released on February 18 in Japan. A western release is expected to follow around the same time although Sony has not commented.
