Sony recently released its quarterly financial research, raeveling mixed findings.
According to Kotaku the results show that PlayStation 3 sales climbed in the months between October and December 2009, but the PlayStation Portable (PSP) saw a decline.
In this period Sony sold 6.5 million PS3s globally, a considerable increase from the year on year figures of 4.5 million consoles during the same period in 2008. This was largely thanks to the introduction of the PS3 Slim in the second half of 2009 as well as significant price reductions across the board.
The portable range however saw a considerable decline. Despite the company’s introduction of the PSP Go in October 2009 mobile sales were down from 5.1 million units in the third quarter of 2008 to 4.2 million units in 2009. The PlayStation 2 also saw a decline from 2.5 million units sold in the third quarter of 2008 to 2.1 million units in the same quarter of 2009.
Despite the decline Sony as a group company still posted its most profitable quarter in over a year – perhaps indicating that international consumers are once again ready to start spending on electronic goods.
