The Last of Us phone sex number “an honest mistake”

28 June 2013

The Last of Us is a brilliant game, but it’s been pretty unlucky in the PR department lately, what with Ellen Page’s comments and an artist accusing Naughty Dog of stealing. Now the dev has reportedly handed out a sex-hotline number through the game.

The issue was raised when gamers noticed a harmless “Pest Control” poster in the game, with a number attached to it. When the number is called (in real life) it links to a sex-hotline service.

“That was an artist’s mistake,” said The Last of Us creative director Neil Druckmann. “What happened was, they put some phone numbers in the game and then they thought they could just change the area code to 555, then it’s invalid because it’s what they do in movies. But I guess that doesn’t work when you have a 1-800 in front of it.”

“We’re now working to take it out,” he added. “It was just an honest mistake.”

We don’t really know what to make of this – whether it’s a coincidence or a silly joke, it’s still pretty funny.
