PS3 firmware update v3.21 incoming

30 March 2010

Sony has announced via the official PlayStation Blog that the next PS3 firmware update will be released via the PlayStation Network on April 1.

The update will remove the ability to operate Linux on old PS3 “fat” consoles. It is thought that Linux funtioonality presents a security risk, as it allows potential hackers access to core software components in the console.

Of course there is the option to not download the update, but then users will forfeit all access to the PlayStation Network.

They may will also have problems with the following:

•  Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
•  Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
•  Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
