Rumour: Sony to announce a premium PSN service at E3

The first rule about business they teach you in BCom is that if people are prepared to pay for something, other people will charge them for it. Well, I’m guessing, because I didn’t actually do a BCom because BComs are criminally boring.

Anyway, according to VG247’s top secret corporate moles, Sony’s going to announce a premium PSN service at E3 next month, a subject that’s been a subject of some speculation over the past few months. Apparently costing “less than £50 per year” (but still potentially more than the Xbox LIVE’s £39 annual subscription), the premium service will allegedly offer some sort of value-added bonuses, and not take anything away from the current free service.

The premium service also won’t hog the hot topic cross-game chat feature. “I can tell you now, 100 percent, that that’s not the case,” claims the source. “There’s nothing in the premium package which will gimp regular PSN users.”

Which is a bit strange, considering cross-game chat isn’t currently a feature.

The guy also says Sony intends to offer subscribers one free PSN title each month, from a choice of “two to four”, adding that, “If you work it out, PSN games cost an average of £6-9 each so over a year you’re basically going to be breaking even.”
