I’m not the only person who thinks that the fact that Microsoft and Sony both sell their current generation HD consoles with a bundled cable that is not capable of transferring an HD signal ridiculous.
Sure HDMI cables are reasonably priced and easy to find if you know what’s what. Sadly, many an uninformed customer will simply set the console up using the default cable supplied, and never know that that they are playing at sub-HD levels.
Microsoft at least used to ship an HDMI cable with the Xbox 360 Elite, but they stopped doing that around the time they cut its price.
Sony, however, has always shipped its premium home console with standard definition cables. “It only does EVERYTHING. Except HD, unless you go out and buy a third party HDMI cable,” should read the PS3’s catch phrase.
Well, I am pleased to report that those days are behind us. Kotaku has spotted new PS3 packaging currently on shelves in the US which indicates a new PS3 bundle that ships with an HDMI cable. Expect to wait a few weeks before these babies hit local shores.
