Dark Souls developers From Software are bringing out a new action RPG, and from gamers’ first impressions, it is quite the dark and gory title.
Titled Bloodborne, the PlayStation 4 exclusive is set to transport players into a “dark and terror-filled gothic world” filled with deranged and nightmarish creatures.
The game takes place in an ancient, forgotten city called Yharnam, which, over the years, has attracted sick and dying people seeking out medical remedies said to lie within the city’s walls. Yharnam is also cursed with an endemic illness, and your character must navigate the streets while avoiding “malformed beasts and deranged mobs stricken with this horrific illness”. Oh, and almost certain madness or death.
Joystiq was one of the publications who were given access to a hands-off demo of the game, and they said Bloodborne’s roots were set in the vein of Dark Souls. “From Software may be approaching the PS4-exclusive action-RPG as an original property, but in that hands-off demo, differences and similarities were both patent.”
Bloodborne is said to run in 1080p at 30fps, and will include online play – details of which have yet to be revealed.
In terms of weapons, your character will wield a huge saw in one hand, and a blunderbuss – a muzzle-loading short-range gun – in the other. Using the saw and gun correctly can be devastating, according to those who saw the game, and produced lots of blood.
“I didn’t see dismemberment, but every swipe, slice and shot seemed to elicit the “blood-splattering combat” promised on the demo’s introductory slide,” said Joystiq.
