Announced at E3 2005 by Sony, the PlayStation 3 got off to a rocky start with console gamers around the world due to its extremely high launch price – $600 for the 60GB version. Fortunately, a price drop in 2006 saw the console gain better traction in the wider market.

New features that came with the PS3 included its Blu-ray player, wireless Sixaxis controller, and the PlayStation Network.

Besides the price, Sony’s PS3 also suffered negative press just after launch when the “yellow light of death” – YLOD for short – started making an appearance. Sony apologised for the breakdowns and allowed users to send their consoles back, after which a refurbished model was returned to the gamer.

Once all this had settled down somewhat, Sony launched the sleeker version of its PlayStation 3 console, the PS3 Slim, in 2009. The skinny version captured Sony’s brand perfectly, in my humble opinion, with its sleek black design, simple font, and catchy advertisements.

To date, Sony has sold over 83 million PS3 consoles, along with millions of games and exclusives such as: The Uncharted Series, The Last of Us, Killzone, Resistance, and Ratchet and Clank.
