Sony has paid homage to the PlayStation 1 and all it has done for the company – and the gaming industry in general – by commissioning a limited edition PlayStation 4 console.
The limited edition PS4, which celebrates 20 years of PlayStation, sports the original PlayStation Grey and comes packed in a commemorative box.
Only 12,300 units will be sold, and Sony has already said that it will not be available via “traditional retail channels” in the SCEE (Europe) region – but we have word received word from local PlayStation distributors, Ster Kinekor, that it will be hitting South African shores in some capacity.
“To celebrate the 20th Anniversary, Ster Kinekor Entertainment will be running a national competition in search of South Africa’s Ultimate PlayStation fans who will stand the chance of winning 20th Anniversary Edition consoles,” the group said.
“Other opportunities for PlayStation fans to get their hands on one of these consoles will be announced in the coming weeks.”
While details are thin at this stage, we can at least still bask in the beauty of what is to come.
“Sony Computer Entertainment, founded by Ken Kutaragi, was a project borne out of sincere passion and deep admiration for the craft of game development. The mid ’90s were an exciting time for game developers, driven by the explosion of powerful but affordable 3D graphics rendering hardware and the birth of many young and adventurous development studios,” said the PlayStation Blog.
The company states that this PS4 is meant to embody that passion and excitement.
And now for an unboxing video, because life isn’t fair.
