160 GB PS3 spotted outside Japan

17 August 2010

Previously only available in Japan, a 160 GB PlayStation 3 SKU is now being listed by US retailer Gamestop. They’re advertising it as “Just announced”, but since Sony has yet to actually announce anything, we can probably assume they really mean “Just announced in some top secret inter-corporate meeting, and some goon in the IT department who’s totally about to lose his minimum wage job accidentally posted it on the website, lol”.

The console is being sold as a regular basic bundle at $299.99, as well as a $404.97 God of War bundle (with the game and two controllers) and a $379.97 accessories bundle (with two controllers and a Bluetooth remote). It’s worth noting that the standard $299.99 bundle is exactly the same price as the current 120 GB SKU. Interestingly enough, however, it looks like Gamestop’s deal features only black consoles, and not the white model. Still no sign of the other Japanese exclusive and otherwise elusive 320 GB SKU, either.

Could this perhaps be Sony’s response to the new 250 GB Xbox SKU? While it’s easy enough to replace the PS3’s hard drive with any generic model, it’s probably in Sony’s best interests to market a high capacity retail model for the average user who isn’t going to bother with – or even know about – that.

Sony has yet to confirm any of this, but if a 160 GB SKU is replacing the current 120 GB model, it’s likely the latter is going to see a stock clearance price drop. Opportunists, assemble!
