LOLIRONY: PS Jailbreak mod cloned

23 August 2010

In what might be the most hilarious thing ever, the PS Jailbreak mod has been cloned. The USB dongle allows owners to copy and play Blu-ray disc content from their PlayStation HDDs, ending the console’s bold and unprecedented four-year siege against piracy.

But it doesn’t take long for the pirates to pirate the pirates, and with a yo-ho-ho and a bottle of triple distilled irony, it looks like the manufacturers of the PS Jailbreak have already been jolly rogered. The website now warns customers to “Beware of imitators and Chinese knockoffs”, that the PS Jailbreak is the “original solution”, and to make sure the retailer has an “authorised logo”. Authorised to scam the gaming industry out of millions of dollars, that is.

According to Digital Foundry, the mod is an ostensibly simple bit of hardware – a 48-pin microcontroller chip on a USB board – with an additional software layer, already distributed all over the internet. It’s not exactly the biggest shock in the history of stuff that opportunistic and cheaper competitors have closed in so quickly.

Apparently the guys selling this mod forgot that their market is basically a bunch of freeloading bumholes – if they’re not going to pay for games, why are they going to pay for a £100 mod when cheaper options are available?

Sony has yet to make a public statement about any of this.
