Gran Turismo 5 wants a 10GB install for “smooth” gameplay

30 August 2010

Polophony Digital CEO Kazunori Yamauchi has tweeted that in order to get the best experience out of Gran Turismo 5, you will want to perform the 10GB install.

Of course, the 10GB install is not a requirement, and it will be playable with just 256MB of space, however, if you want the game to run “smoothly,” the install is recommended.

Exactly what constitutes a “smooth” experience has not been specified, but it probably has to do with load times, frame rates and buffer loading stutter while in game.

A few years ago this would have been a problem, as the original PS3 shipped with a 20GB harddrive. The console’s storage space was quickly ramped up 40GB, then 60, 80, 120,250 and soon 160GB and 320GB.

This means that the 10GB install will not be a problem for many PS3 owners, however, it also means that those sitting with early generation console may have issues running that game “smoothly.”
