Amazon lists PlayStation VR for R12,000 plus, albeit briefly

PlayStation VR - PS VR Amazon Canada Listing

After the Oculus Rift’s price was announced alongside pre-orders, a hefty $599 (R9, 500), gamers were understandably upset. And then it got a little bit worse.

PlayStation 4 gamers, undoubtedly revelling in the misery of the PC elite, were only too happy to point out that their virtual reality headset, the PlayStation VR, would be more affordable… until it wasn’t.

Yesterday, market analysts suggested that PS VR would cost between $400 (R6,450) and $600 (R9,671), which was a bit of a bitter pill to swallow.

Without an official confirmation or more information to support the analysts, many are passing it off as merely a prediction, which it is.

Now, however, Amazon Canada has listed the PlayStation VR and priced it at $1, 125 Canadian (or about $800 American), which is R12, 900 locally. They have removed the price since, but it’s still something to ponder.

Not to damper PlayStation fans’ expectations even more, but Forbes managed to get a reply from Sony regarding the recent listing. Sony, rather worryingly, didn’t deny the price.

Instead, Sony said: “This was an error by Amazon, we haven’t announced price for PlayStation VR.” That’s not exactly denying the price, now is it.

We know capable VR tech isn’t cheap, and the addition of a processor box doesn’t help the PS VR’s cause, but $800 seems a little steep.

Not only is that $200 more than the Oculus Rift, a superior VR headset on paper, but it’s twice the price of the console itself. Here’s hoping it’s an error.

Considering all the extra tech they have to put into PlayStation vr, because of the weak PS4 specs, it looks very reasonable.

Compare PS4 + headset to required PC + oculus. You need quite a beast of a PC.
