Over a week on, Sony has finally come out and made an official acknowledgement regarding hacker collective fail0verflow’s much-publicised PS3 security key hack. I guess that’s how long it takes to organise a firing squad for the Sony anti-piracy department.
In a rather terse statement issued to Edge, the company said only that, “We are aware of this, and are currently looking into it. We will fix the issues through network updates, but because this is a security issue, we are not able to provide you with any more details.”
However, according to fail0verflow, that’s simply not possible. In an interview with the BBC, fail0verflow member pytey claimed that, “The complete console is compromised – there is no recovery from this. This is as bad as it gets – someone is getting into serious trouble at Sony right now. The only way to fix this is to issue new hardware. Sony will have to accept this.”
Whether or not they’re right about that remains to be seen, but the unhappy prospect of piracy on the console must be very worrying indeed for Sony just now.
