Uncharted 4 heads to African seas and PS4

15 November 2013

Naughty Dog have released a teaser trailer for a new Uncharted game for PS4, hinting at a journey to the African continent.

We have no idea what the new game will be about exactly, but the short teaser trailer does give some clues as to the content and location.

A voice speaks of “chains that can’t be broken” and being buried alive for 15 years, “erased, rotting in that hell-hole” – possibly revealing the tone and motivation of a new antagonist for Drake.

The video moves over a map pointing to southern Africa, moving past the Cape of Good Hope and settling and focusing on the Isle of Saint Mary, off the coast of Madagascar.

What significance does this specific island hold?

We can only speculate – but according to Wikipedia, the island was a popular base for pirates throughout the 17th and 18th centuries – and played host to “legendary” pirates.

Apparently a “utopian pirate republic” known as Libertalia was also rumoured to exist in this area – but the republic’s existence, let alone its location, has never been proven.

Of course (if Wikipedia is to be believed) Libertalia’s motto was “for God and liberty” – words which make a clear appearance in the video, alongside the skull and crossbones synonymous with piracy.

The route is also in-line with the route that Nate’s “ancestor” Sir Francis Drake took on his journey between 1577 and 1580.
