Tomb Raider Definitive Edition heading to next-gen

21 November 2013

A recent leak on Amazon.de has revealed that Square Enix will be porting Tomb Raider to next-gen consoles in 2014. The version for the Playstation 4 will be called the “Definitive edition.”

Tomb Raider will be the second game that has a confirmed port for the Playstation 4, the other being Injustice: Gods Among Us.

The listings were taken down soon after their appearance, but it was enough to prompt Square Enix to say that they were going to have some announcements to make at the Spike VGX 2013 awards on 7 December.

“It’s so hard to keep a secret these days!” the publisher told IGN. “We appreciate all of the enthusiasm, however we don’t have any details to share just yet. That said, we highly recommend you keep an eye on any major gaming events happening in early December.”

Tomb Raider is one of the nominations for Game of the Year at the VGX awards and voice actress Camilla Luddington is also nominated for her portrayal of the younger Lara Croft.

Amazon.de’s listing had a 24 January 2014 launch for Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, which will come with all of the game’s DLC to date and Amazon pre-orders also include an exclusive art book.

A separate listing for the same game did not mention which system it was for, but did say it was meant for “next-gen systems.”  No mention was made of the Definitive edition appearing on the Xbox One, Wii U, or PC platforms.

Tomb Raider’s sales in 2013 were around 4 million copies in retail stores, but the game missed the sales targets that Square was expecting for the reboot. Despite this, the game appeared on the top of the sales charts for its first week on launch and has been the fastest-selling Tomb Raider game in the entire franchise.
