In an interview with MCVUK, UK MD for Sony, Fergal Gara, claims that Sony had no idea Bloodborne would sell so well… yeah, sure you didn’t Fergal.
We’re fairly sure that the hordes of gamers frothing at the mouth for Bloodborne was a pretty obvious indicator for anticipation and excitement.
“It did surprise us,” says Gara. “We had expectations to do well. We looked at the Souls series as a frame of reference, and we thought we could do better than that. We did – and then some. Relative to some of our sister territories, we were being quite ambitious, but even that proved to be conservative.”
We don’t think Bloodborne’s sales could have gone any other way. Think about it, how many real top-tier games are there to compete with Bloodborne? Very few, if any.
With nothing else to buy, of course gamers are going to buy the game Sony marketed the absolute hell out of.
I think Bloodborne might have just landed just at the right time; it was a relatively quiet time, it was a very high quality title and a great platform differentiator for us. We were caught a little bit behind in terms of the volume, but we were able to chase it and maximise its potential.”
Bloodborne is still number 33 in the UK sales charts, an impressive feat for a niche exclusive.
Would love to see stats on this one, especially how far people actually progressed with the game (I might be old or just “not a gamer” but just as Dark Souls or Demon Souls weren’t my cup of tea I suspect Bloodborne would have slotted in quite nicely in my personal “don’t bother” list). My guess would be that less than 20% actually completed it (if even).
