It’s not new news that the PS4 is dominating sales and is remaining impressively popular. Many would argue that the PS4 doesn’t need a price-cut to maintain popularity.
However, in a surprise move, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that there are plans to slash the price of the PS4, beginning 1st of October.
Sadly, this price-cut will only be implemented in Japan, but there are hopes that this price-cut is going to be made effective in other territories, even if previous price-cuts haven’t.
In Japan, the 500GB model of the PS4 will cost ¥34980 ($290 or R3, 800), down from ¥39980 ($332, R4, 440), as announced at the Tokyo Game Show.
By comparison, the 500GB PS4 is R5, 700 at Takelot, R5, 999 at Makro and R6, 000 at DionWired. Suffice it to say, a lot more than what you can get one for in Japan.
Sony hopes that price-cut along with their expansion in games, network series and their recently re-named PlayStation VR headset will further support the PS4’s market progress, especially with new audiences.
The PS4 is extremely popular across the world with strong market shares in some countries of around 90%. But even if Sony has plans to reduce the price of the PS4 in the US and Europe within the coming weeks, we’ll never know for sure.
Console manufacturers tend to cut system prices to bolster overall sales, so we are hopeful. Sony has done this in the past and cut the price of the PS3 about a year following its release.
Even more so, console makes would reduce the price of their respective consoles before the second holiday season hits, and Sony may very well want to stay ahead of the curve.
If there is a drop in the price of the PS4 in Europe, and then by extension South Africa, we would be extremely happy.
