DICE has unveiled Battlefield 4 Commander Mode gameplay footage at E3. The mode is a much-loved component of the Battlefield series that was contentiously absent in Battlefield 3.
The commander is the only player with control of an overview of the battlefield map and can assist their team by deploying support tactics (such as gunships, missiles, infantry scanning, EMP, etc).
The abilities the commander has at their disposal will also be linked to the success of players on the ground. The commander can also hop into a squad leader on the ground to get a first hand look at what’s happening. This will reintroduce a really interesting element to squad-based battles in the undeniably gorgeous Battlefield 4.
Broadly speaking, the commander will have three roles, gathering map intel and preventing the enemy commander from doing so, providing troops with vehicle and supply drops, and a range of offensive options (such as missiles and air-strikes).
A cool feature revealed is that players can use a Tablet PC to connect to a live game on PC or console and assume the commander role.
Battlefield 4 launches on 1 November 2013, and so until then we’ll just have to soak in the gameplay trailers. Battlefield 3 footage will be streaming live from the E3 show floor over the next three days, so head on over to the Battlefield blog if you want to keep up to speed: http://blogs.battlefield.com

It sounds like a really nice feature if implemented properly in clan matches etc, but I’m really not looking forward to the idea of some random person yelling orders just because he happened to spawn as the commander. I’ve had enough of that for one lifetime in dota.
