WhatsApp retains and stores chat logs even after those chats have been deleted, according to a report<\/a><\/strong> by iOS researcher Jonathan Zdziarski.<\/p>\n

Zdziarski found that traces of the chats remained even after the logs had been deleted and can easily be accessed using a backup and recovery tool.<\/p>\n

Simply preserving deleted data on a secure device is not usually a significant issue, but when that data comes off the device as freely as WhatsApp\u2019s database does, it poses a rather serious risk to privacy.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, that\u2019s what\u2019s happening here and why this is something users should be aware of.<\/p>\n

The WhatsApp chat database gets\u00a0copied over from the iPhone during a backup, which means it will show up in your iCloud backup and in a desktop backup.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The app may have marked the message to be deleted, but it can be recoverable using forensic or other tools as the new data has not been overwritten.<\/p>\n
