Backblaze has officially released its report <\/a><\/strong>on hard drive failure rates for Q2 2016.<\/p>\n

This marks the first time the company’s 8TB drives have become readily commercially available and appeared on the list.<\/p>\n

The company also noted a personal preference – Seagate, due primarily to the fact that they had difficulty sourcing Toshiba and Western Digital drives.<\/p>\n

As a result, we (perhaps unsurprisingly) see issues with specific models of HDDs rather than wholesale brands (WDC 2TB drives<\/strong> for example).<\/p>\n

Before rushing out to buy a new drive, we also suggest checking out this article<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0for some other factors to consider when buying a hard drive in South Africa.<\/p>\n

A couple of observations on the chart (click to enlarge):<\/p>\n

  1. The models that have an annualized failure rate of 0.00% had zero hard drive failures in Q2 2016.<\/li>\n
  2. The annualized failure rate is computed as follows: ((Failures)\/(Drive Days\/365)) * 100. Therefore consider the number of \u201cFailures\u201d and \u201cDrive Days\u201d before reaching any conclusions about the failure rate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
