As usual, the opinions expressed in this column are the author’s alone, and do not reflect those held by MyGaming. <\/em><\/p>\n

So, in brief then: about a year ago, Sony removed OtherOS support from the PlayStation 3 due to “security concerns”, rantrantrant. Although it was – technically – an optional firmware update, declining it meant having a sort of nice-shaped brick to show your friends. Whatever, it’s a games console. I’d imagine playing games is kind of the big idea or something.<\/p>\n

Or apparently not. According to a bunch of script kiddies and “homebrew enthusiasts” (lol), Sony’s decision was an egregious abuse of self-interested corporate capitalist communist power, and an overbearing, arrogant affront to everybody, everywhere.<\/p>\n

So hackers – pledged to champion the otherwise inviolable rights<\/a> of mouth-breathing ectomorphs all over the planet to do whatever they liked with their GAMES console – set about breaking the PS3’s security ciphers. Which they did, some months later, and promptly published their results all over the internet with all the smug, sanctimonious self-importance of a 15-year old bringing a titty mag to school and claiming it’s for an art project.<\/p>\n

Oh, I’m sure there really are people out there with legitimate (honest, terminally dreary) reasons for wanting to run Linux on their PS3s. Maybe they want to install XBMC or play SuperTux or work on their open-source clone of the Win98 starfield screensaver or something. So to both of you, I’m sorry. You must be devastated. Have you heard about PCs? They’re pretty great, and maybe just what you’re looking for.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, back in reality, anybody else with half a brainstem realises that – all social benevolence, sub-cultural liberation, and harmony, harmony, oh love aside for the moment (or ever) – the only real reason most people would hack their PS3s is to pirate games and\/or cheat in them. Or, basically, undermine the entire gaming industry.<\/p>\n

George “GeoHot” Hotz and his coterie of self-styled insurrectionist freedom fighters might think they’re emancipating a bit of plastic and silicon from the dastardly clutches of corporate tyranny, but all they’re really doing is giving assholes a free pass to assholery. As if Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s multiplayer community weren’t already whinging, offensive, and repulsive enough, now it’s full of aimbots and wallhacks too. Seriously, why should anybody have to put up with that just so some other guy can have his stupid command kernel? We invented a word for that – “selfish”.<\/p>\n

I mean, to anyone out there who wants to defend console hackers – would you give your car keys to some random passer-by, and say, “Hey bro, maybe you want to grease the carburetter or something, HFGL”. Thought not. Now imagine what Sony must be thinking, with almost 50 million consoles out there.<\/p>\n

If you so desperately want to be part of a caring, sharing, white hat-wearing collective, I’d suggest investigating residential vacancies in some other universe.<\/p>\n

Sony’s rolling out permabans to hacked consoles? Good. I’m sure everybody looking forward to Killzone 3 multiplayer must be thrilled. And to those of you looking to develop games for PS3, perhaps consider getting a real job in PS3 development. I mean, it seems so obvious now, doesn’t it?<\/p>\n
