Whether it is times when we are at fault for our poor choices, or moments when things just go south because other people like to watch the world burn.

The PlayStation brand has been around for a while now, and throughout its 21 years of existence, there have been moments that I am sure Sony would love to take back.

Such moments include the leak of their latest console and the expensive reveal of their PS3.

These moments caused quite a stir for all the wrong reasons, and I thought it would be fun to bring them back. Sort of like tearing open the wound.

PS3 is expensive

New consoles are always exciting, and when the reveals come around, we all sit and predict what is will be like, and most of all, what it will retail for.

It is E3 2006, and the PlayStation 3 excitement is rising. After the huge success of the PlayStation 2, Sony had it all in the bag, well, until they revealed the price points for the PlayStation 3 that is.

Sony took to the E3 stage and very confidently revealed that the PS3 would release at a $499 and $599 price point. That is double what the PlayStation 4 released at, and that is taking into consideration that it released 7 years later.

Here in South Africa, the console released for R6,299, which is the same price as the PS4 when it released in 2013.

The worst part about the price point was that Sony was still selling it at a loss, which made the world wonder that they were actually thinking by manufacturing such an expensive console.

The base 20GB model released for $499, and a measly 80GB model was a whole $100 more.

Give that 20GB and 80GB was nothing when it came to storage space, the prices were ridiculous. It took a few years for Sony to actually recover from this, and heal the damage done by this reveal.

It was not until 2009, when Sony rebranded the console and dropped the price to $299, that the company actually saw significant growth on the platform.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH2w2l1JTs4

No Man’s Sky disaster

Sony have been on a quest to back indie developers around the world, so much so that they actually help fund them too. Hello Games was the latest indie developer to be funded by Sony, and its game No Man’s Sky was one of the most anticipated games of 2016.

Well, hype sometimes kills games, as No Man’s Sky has shown over the past month.

The game has been negatively received across the board for being extremely underwhelming. Trailers showed off massive space battles and multiplayer, which is plainly not present in the game.

Gameplay has been changed too, from the visuals to the planets. Early in-game footage showed off dense worlds with massive creatures and living and breathing fauna and flora.

What we got was a dead and barren universe, with buggy creatures and very little to keep us bus.

Although Sony never actually commented on this situation, they started handing out refunds to players who requested them. Which goes to show they are a little embarrassed about the game themselves.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5jWtz3rzco

Great PSN hack

In 2011, Sony’s PlayStation Network was put to the test when a massive hacking scenario took place across its services. Sony’s security failed and the entire PlayStation Network was pulled offline due to an external threat.

The outage was the longest recorded outage due to an intrusion in history and lasted 23 days. The PlayStation Network went offline from April 17, and came back online on 4 May 2011.

The outage left 77 million PSN accounts in the open, and millions of users had their credit card and bank information leaked to the hackers.

In the end, the outage cost Sony $171 million. Of which most of this was due to fines from government protection agencies around the world, as well as compensation for users in forms of games.

Sony has since remodeled their network completely, for a safer and more secure environment. There has nothing close to this outage in 5 years.

PS3 dies

Every four years a leap year comes around which gives us an extra day of the year. Sure, we can handle the fact that we might need to keep this in the back of our minds, but it seemed that in 2010, the PlayStation 3 was not powerful enough to understand this phenomenon.

Users with an older “phat” model of the console were unable to log into the PSN, play any digital games, and even access any games with trophy information.

This was due to the console’s internal clock, which went buggy when the clock changed to February 29, leaving the console in a twilight zone for 24 hours until March 1 came around.

Sony did fix the issue, but it took so long for them to realize what it was, they the next day all was fine again in the gaming world.

Since then, tech companies have made it priority make sure that the internal clocks can distinguish when it is a leap year.

PSP Go

We now live in a world where digital content is king. Games and media are so much easier to download, and pre-orders and such are no longer an issue when the need comes around to download them.

Sony however, revealed a PSP model which was way before its time. The PSP Go was a digital-only PSP device, which excluded the physical media drive, the UMD.

The handheld would have been a smash hit today as digital media runs the world, but back in 2013 things were a little different.

Gamers would rather purchase physical games, and downloading games was a hassle due to bandwidth restrictions.

The PSP Go was a complete fail due to these restrictions. The device relied too much on digital content, and this turned gamers to the original PSP model rather than sticking to the digital-only device.

Sales of the device came in under 20,000 weekly in Japan and the US, compared to the 70,000+ other PSP models sold.

In the end, the PSP Go was a bargain bin device, but the potential was there.

More Gaming News

How South African ISPs actually deal with piracy notifications

Mortal Kombat XL is coming to PC

The best graphics card for 4K gaming – performance per rand comparison

[20,7,11681
1387,623,15399,1853,973,71
post-103449","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-features","category-hardware","category-playstation","tag-playstation-network","tag-ps2","tag-ps3","tag-playstation4","tag-psp","tag-sony
["GET
