Desktop Dungeons has been awarded with the Excellence in Design Award at the 13th annual Independent Games Festival (IGF). The game was up against some stiff competition in the category – Minecraft, Faraway, Super Crate Box, Nidhogg.<\/p>\n

The development team of QCF Design walks away with US$2500 (±R17,260) and the usage of worthy accolades afforded by the respected IGF award label. Taking to the stage to accept their award, the boys said, “We kind of didn’t write a speech because of Minecraft.”<\/p>\n

Desktop Dungeons was also nominated for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize (aka Indie Game of the Year). Other nominees in the category were Minecraft, SpyParty, Nidhogg, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Minecraft walked away with the grand prize of US$20,000 (±R138,000).<\/p>\n

We are still waiting for official comment from the QCF Design team, who are no doubt sleeping off a heavy night of celebratory partying. Congratulations to the crew on their worthy award – an inspiration to South African game developers.<\/p>\n

The IGF celebrates the brightest and most influential creations to come out of the independent video game development community in the past year. The award ceremony is an important staple in the indie development world, and the continued popularity and importance of the IGF has helped to highlight and popularise the major independent games of the last decade, such as Darwinia, Braid, World Of Goo, Machinarium and Limbo. Hopefully Desktop Dungeons will soon be added to that esteemed list.<\/p>\n
