It’s becoming more and more clear that in order for a movie to become a modern day blockbuster, it has to perform well in the Chinese market.<\/p>\n
One of the quickest ways to gain credibility is to put a well-known Chinese actor in your film – usually just long enough so that the audience recognise them but not so long that they actually influence the plot.<\/p>\n
According to Gizmodo<\/a><\/strong>, Chinese audiences have begun noticing this pandering and wants Hollywood to do better.<\/p>\n “Chinese audiences have developed a name for this empty form of pandering: \u201cflower vases.\u201d<\/p>\n “It\u2019s similar to the \u201csexy lamp test,\u201d used when female characters could be replaced with an inanimate object with no impact to the plot.”<\/p>\n Qiu Jie, the chief executive of a Beijing-based studio, told the Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0that all studios need to do is make sure the added character should be \u201cmeaningful and proper.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe understand that a Chinese character will not be a lead role in the film. But if you can at least do that, the local audiences will not criticize it.”<\/p>\n
