It’s been a good year to be a gamer, with the release of new technology across multiple\u00a0platforms pushing hardware and devices to the next level.<\/p>\n

We’ve seen a GPU architecture change that has trickled down to consoles and the first consumer VR platform take off.<\/p>\n

PlayStation 4 Pro<\/h3>\n

The PS4 Pro is the biggest news in console gaming this year.<\/p>\n

While the PS4 Slim and Xbox One S took advantage of AMD’s GCN 4.0 architecture to downsize their form factors while retaining power, the PS4 Pro aims for upscaled 4K using a cutting-edge Polaris GPU.<\/p>\n

The console is the bridge to true 4K HDR gaming, offering enough power for upscaled 1800p in most places, which provides a great idea of what to expect from consoles in the next year or two.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation 4 Pro will be available in South Africa from\u00a0R6,990<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>later this year.<\/p>\n

Next-gen graphics cards<\/h3>\n

This year saw both AMD and Nvidia unveil their new graphics architectures, with both companies opting for different manufacturing processes.<\/p>\n

The companies remain as competitive as ever, with their new GPU lineup allowing PC gamers to reach 1080p benchmarks far easier than ever before.<\/p>\n

Nvidia still dominates the high end of the market with its GTX 1070, GTX 1080, and Titan X Pascal graphics cards, but AMD is set to challenge Team Green with their Vega graphics cards next year.<\/p>\n

Desktop-class laptops<\/h3>\n

Another product of the increased power efficiency offered by Pascal and Polaris, gaming laptops now boast more power than ever before.<\/p>\n

In what is now becoming a common practice, Nvidia has phased out its mobile-class GPUs in favour of full-sized desktop cards for gaming laptops.<\/p>\n

This means that the GeForce GTX 1080 in your gaming laptop is essentially the same as the one in your desktop.<\/p>\n

This version does feature some modern comforts however, such as an HDMI output.<\/p>\n

Digital Storm Aura<\/h3>\n

The Digital Storm Aura is a high-end, all-in-one gaming PC.<\/p>\n

While most all-in-one gaming PC solutions are disappointingly underpowered and overpriced, the Aura serves as both an ultrawide curved monitor and a customisable PC case.<\/p>\n

You can make any hardware adjustments you want, with only a few limitations such as CPU cooler height.<\/p>\n

There were a number of VR headsets that launched to consumers this year, but the most technically impressive and powerful has to be the HTC Vive.<\/p>\n

The Vive’s movement sensors allow you to walk in addition to look around, something not yet offered by other VR solutions.<\/p>\n
