{"id":116867,"date":"2017-04-14T16:30:32","date_gmt":"2017-04-14T14:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/?p=116867"},"modified":"2017-04-14T15:48:52","modified_gmt":"2017-04-14T13:48:52","slug":"new-video-streaming-service-coming-to-south-africa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mygaming.co.za\/news\/entertainment\/116867-new-video-streaming-service-coming-to-south-africa","title":{"rendered":"New video streaming service coming to South Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new video streaming service called Digital Entertainment On Demand (DEOD) is set to launch in South Africa in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>The service is being launched by Discover Digital, the company which powers MTN\u2019s VOD service VU.<\/p>\n<p>In a save the date notice sent to the media, the launch of the \u201cdisruptive on-demand service\u201d is set for 4 May.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Subscription, movie rentals, and live streaming<\/h3>\n<p>The service was labelled as \u201cthe ultimate in Internet television\u201d on its website product page, but this has since been removed.<\/p>\n<p>Discover Digital said DEOD will offer various subscription packages, movie rentals, and premium live TV services.<\/p>\n<p>It is speculated that the price of DEOD\u2019s all-inclusive package \u2013 which will feature on-demand content and live channels, including sport and news \u2013 will be under R200 per month.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that <a href=\"https:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/101208-new-internet-tv-player-seals-sports-content-deal.html\"><strong>Discover Digital concluded a sports deal<\/strong><\/a> for an Internet TV service it planned to launch in South Africa during 2014. This did not materialise.<\/p>\n<p>DEOD is also a title sponsor of the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/supergp.co.za\/\" target=\"_blank\">2017 SuperGP Champions Trophy<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to subscription options, DEOD will also offer movie rentals \u2013 including films it said\u00a0are \u201cfresh off the big screen\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"my-4\">Launch platforms and partners<\/h3>\n<p>As with the service it offered to MTN with the launch of <a href=\"http:\/\/mybroadband.co.za\/news\/broadcasting\/148123-vu-video-streaming-rebadged-mtn-frontrow-with-cheaper-prices.html\"><strong>VU<\/strong><\/a>, Discover Digital appears to be opening DEOD to partners.<\/p>\n<p>It is rumoured the company has already partnered with a large South African hotel group for the launch.<\/p>\n<p>On its website, Discover Digital said it realised an alternative model to streaming video was needed through the course of its work with telcos and businesses which wanted to offer on-demand or Internet TV services.<\/p>\n<p>Discover Digital said that for companies to offer such a service, they face several challenges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum guaranteed subscriber levels required by studios.<\/li>\n<li>High content and technical set-up costs.<\/li>\n<li>Economic challenges of achieving large subscriber volumes in a relatively short period of time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>DEOD aims to overcome these obstacles, with the platform suspected to launch on iOS, Android, and PC.<\/p>\n<p>It will also support Chromecast and Airplay, certain \u201cbespoke\u201d Internet media player devices, and a smart TV app.<\/p>\n<p><a
